Many of our habits and behavioral patterns are anchored in our subconscious mind . That's what makes it so difficult to consciously change them, even though we know how harmful those habits or patterns might be. And even if we want the change to happen so hard with our minds.

And that is where the power of hypnosis lies. This is easily explained in the video below. Although hypnosis is not a therapy in itself, it is an effective tool to achieve therapeutic goals.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a state in which your conscious attention weakens and during which you are in contact with your subconscious mind. Actually, this is a very natural state that you are in several times a day. If you are completely absorbed in a book and don't notice anyone coming in or hear what someone is saying to you, you are in a light trance. Likewise if you're on autopilot and can't remember where you drove past.

Hypnosis gives you  access to the subconscious . The subconscious makes up 90% of our brain capacity. Memories and automatisms are stored there. The hypnotist ensures that your consciousness and your subconscious are aligned. Then the rest will take care of itself. Is that not the case and do you want e.g. stop smoking with your consciousness very hard, then this will not work if the subconscious does not cooperate. Our subconscious and therefore our habits are so much stronger than our consciousness. Who does not know someone in their environment who has tried in vain to quit smoking or lose weight purely on willpower?

  What does hypnosis help for?

The applications are many. Here I list the most important ones for you:

- quit smoking

- weight loss

- fears and phobias

- migraine

- pain reduction

- stress reduction

- more confidence

- sleep better

- annoying habits such as picking your nose, biting your nails, wetting the bed, annoying tics

In short, hypnosis helps you feel mentally and physically fitter and healthier for a happier future.

  How many sessions are needed?

If there is no underlying problem (gain of illness, severe trauma, etc.) 1 session is often sufficient. This also depends on the trance depth reached. In some cases, several sessions might be necessary. With a medium trance this can be three sessions, with very light trance up to 6 sessions.

Some people have a very good focus and strong imagination and as a result go into hypnosis very easily. For others, this requires training, requiring multiple sessions or listening to audio recordings.

  What does hypnotherapy cost?

The first session (including intake interview) costs 75 euros and lasts a maximum of 60 minutes. From the second session on you pay 50 euros per session. With some mutual funds, this is partially reimbursed. The efficiency of the treatment keeps the number of sessions to a minimum. Usually 1 to 3 sessions are sufficient.

  Who is Dominik Messiaen?

Dominik Messiaen has a master's degree in Applied Linguistics and worked for 5 years as a French and German teacher with students 15 to 18 years of age.  In 2012, Dominik Messiaen suffered from severe migraine attacks twice a week. After all kinds of treatments, he ends up at his wits' end with a hypnotist he met earlier at a masterclass in the UK. He heals him miraculously in 1 single session.

Dominik's interest has been piqued! He follows the  hypnotherapy training at the European Academy of Hypnosis  and follows master classes at home and abroad. At the same time, he is developing a hypnosis show directed by Walter Janssens (director of Kommilfoo and Man Man Man).

Since then, Dominik Messiaen has been showing other people how hypnosis can help them as a Hypnotherapist. Whether it is for a cure, a positive behavioral change or new insights . Hypnosis works!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is show hypnosis and hypnotherapy compatible ?

I struggled with that question for a long time. Because I am so often asked for therapy from spectators after my performances, I feel it as a moral obligation to also use my abilities to help those people. In the past I referred them to colleagues, but upon inquiry it turned out that they never made contact. The reason is simple: after my performance, the spectators are convinced of my abilities and my respectful interaction with people. That is why they want to be helped by me and do not accept the offer of another hypnotist . So if I don't help them, they'll be left out in the cold.

In addition, I achieve results much faster with them than another practitioner because I no longer have to convince them. In addition, people who actively participated in the performance as volunteers were already in a deep trance . This allows me to bring them back into a deep trance very quickly. This results in more time for treatment and positive suggestions with a much better result.

That is why I am offering people who were in a deep trance on stage during the hypnosis performance a free session as a thank you for their trust.

What can you use hypnotherapy for?

Scientific studies show that hypnosis is especially effective for changes in behavior patterns and automatisms. Think of (irrational) fears or phobias, stopping smoking, coping better with stress, sleeping better, changing eating patterns and weight loss.

Hypnosis is also often used for pain reduction, also in a medical context. For example, at the University Hospital of Ghent, surgery is regularly performed under hypnosis. This offers enormous advantages compared to classic anesthesia, which can cause very nasty side effects.

Some dentists are replacing classical anesthesia with hypnosis.

Rheumatologists are also increasingly seeing the usefulness of hypnosis to help fibromyalgia patients with pain relief.

Before a hypnotist treats pain, consultation with the doctor is very important . Pain is normally a helpful signal. So first, all necessary investigations must be performed to rule out an underlying problem. Pain has an important signaling function in both benign and malignant pain. To avoid worse, the hypnotist should certainly not turn it off completely.

Hypnosis can also be useful for processing trauma. However, the regression technique used for this can potentially cause problems. Therefore, caution is advised and it is advisable to go to a psychologist or psychiatrist who also uses hypnosis. As a precaution I don't do regression myself.

Is Hypnosis Safe?

Hypnosis is a very natural state that we often find ourselves in without realizing it. You continue to hear, see and feel everything. You just continue to function normally. So hypnosis is completely safe.

Want to know more about this? Then take a look at my blog.

Caution is advised with pain reduction and regression for processing trauma. Collaboration and consultation with a general practitioner, psychologist or psychiatrist is strongly recommended.

When you stop smoking, lose weight, reduce stress and get rid of tics or bad habits, you can obviously only benefit from it.

How can I be sure that everything is going as it should?

At the end of each session, Dominik Messiaen suggests that the hypnotized person remembers everything perfectly . The disadvantage is that some doubt whether they were really in hypnosis. However, this disadvantage does not outweigh the peace of mind for both parties.

Dominik Messiaen followed a professional training as a hypnotherapist and is continuing his education through masterclasses.

Can I drive the car after the hypnosis session?

Absolutely. A good hypnotist will always perform a wake-up. He makes positive suggestions to ensure that the hypnotized person is fully alert.

Some people, called somnambulists, can go deep into hypnosis that can leave them feeling drowsy for the first few seconds or minutes. With a proper wake-up this is minimal and will pass after a few moments.

Do I have to stop my medical treatment?

Absolutely not. In fact, you should always continue your treatment unless your physician or practitioner advises to do so (even if you don't go to a hypnotist)!

Always take your medication as prescribed by your treating physician. Hypnosis or other treatments can only supplement but never replace medical treatment!

Since Dominik Messiaen limits himself to non-medical hypnosis, he thus avoids interference with the possible policy of doctors.

Can results be guaranteed?

Just like with doctors and other healthcare providers, you make an effort and not a result commitment. Nevertheless, if you follow my instructions carefully and if you really want the change , you can expect results after 3 sessions at the latest.

For example, if your partner obligated to quit smoking but you don't really want to, then hypnosis won't work.

Sometimes there is also an underlying motivation to continue the undesirable behaviour. This is called "secondary gain".

Suppose I have 2 grandmothers. One is very active and the other is very depressed. The family decides to take the depressed grandmother to a hypnotherapist. However, the treatment appears to be ineffective. How can this be explained? Well, the depressed grandmother gets a lot of attention and pity. Everyone comes to her. The loss of that attention is a lot worse for her subconscious than the depressed feelings. Consequently, the subconscious mind blocks the change and everything stays the same .

How many sessions are needed?

If there is no underlying problem (secondary gain, severe trauma, etc.) 1 session often is sufficient. This depends on the trance depth reached . In some cases, several sessions might be necessary. With a medium trance it might take 3 sessions, with very light trance up to 6 sessions.

Some people can easily focus and have a strong imagination and as a result go into hypnosis very easily. For others, this requires training, requiring multiple sessions or listening to audio recordings.
